Ballast bags are weighted bags placed in a wake boat to increase displacement, lower the hull deeper into the water, and shape the wave behind it. More weight = more push = bigger surf wave. The placement matters as much as the weight — moving bags port, starboard, or to the bow shapes the wave's height, length, and lip.
WakeBallast makes two types: patented steel shot ballast bags (25 lb and 50 lb, permanent dead weight you can place anywhere) and custom vinyl water ballast bags (made-to-order for your specific boat's lockers and plumbed into your pump system). Most serious setups use both.
Two Types of Boat Ballast Bags
Pick the system that fits your setup. Most boats run vinyl for the main locker capacity and steel shot for trimming the wave on the fly.

How to Use Ballast Bags in a Wake Boat
Placement determines wave shape. Here's how most setups are configured:
Rear Lockers
Primary ballast zone. Vinyl bags fill the full locker volume. Steel shot bags supplement to push the stern deeper for a taller, steeper wave.
Bow
Forward weight levels the hull and extends the wave's length. PerfectFIT bow bags sit under the front seats without taking up seating.
Surf Side (Port/Starboard)
Adding weight to the surf side using steel shot bags increases wave height and push on that side. Easy to move between sets.
Walkway / Floor
50 lb steel shot bags lay flat on the walkway or swim platform to add total displacement when lockers are maxed out.

Common Questions About Boat Ballast
How much ballast do I need for my wake boat?
Most wake surf setups run 1,500–3,500 lbs of total ballast depending on boat size, hull design, and crew weight. Factory ballast is usually 1,000–1,800 lbs — steel shot bags and supplemental vinyl bags make up the difference. Call us at 877-321-7962 and we'll help you spec the right setup for your boat.
What's the difference between steel shot ballast bags and vinyl water ballast bags?
Steel shot bags are dead weight — compact, dense, no plumbing required. You place them wherever you need weight. Vinyl bags fill with water via your pump system and are sized to fit your specific lockers. Steel shot is better for trimming and adjusting on the fly; vinyl is better for high-capacity locker fills integrated with your factory ballast system.
Are ballast bags safe for my boat?
Yes, when used within your boat's rated weight capacity. Our steel shot bags are made from soft 1680D ballistic nylon that won't scratch gelcoat. Always check your boat's maximum weight capacity and distribute weight evenly to avoid listing. Our team can help you plan a balanced setup.
Can I use ballast bags with my factory ballast system?
Yes. Vinyl water ballast bags are designed to integrate with your factory pump system via standard 1" NPT ports. Steel shot bags work independently alongside any factory system — no modifications required.
How long does it take for WakeBallast bags to ship?
All orders ship within 72 hours of purchase — guaranteed. Vinyl bags are made-to-order in our Chandler, Arizona facility. Steel shot bags are in stock and typically ship next business day.
Do you make ballast bags for specific boat models?
Yes. Our PerfectFIT and UniversalFIT vinyl series are sized for specific zones (rear locker, midship, bow) on v-drive wake boats. Use the Year/Make/Model search to find bags sized for your exact boat, or call 877-321-7962 for a custom quote.
