Factory rear hard tank vent/overflow adapter — plug-and-play auxiliary ballast bag integration

Overview

This installation replaces the factory vent/overflow hose between the hard tank and hull through-hull fitting with a WakeBallast adapter assembly. The adapter allows the factory hard tank and auxiliary ballast bag to work together seamlessly.

Because apparently factory ballast was designed by people who feared happiness and large wakes equally. Thankfully, this install is straightforward.

Fill/drain connection to ballast bag
Vent/overflow connection to ballast bag
Retains factory venting system
Simple plug-and-play installation

Tools Required

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • 5/16" socket
  • Ratchet
  • Pliers (optional)
  • Towel for minor water spills

Kit Components

Your kit should include the following. The adapter assembly arrives preconfigured from WakeBallast — the hose labeled "Through-Hull Fitting" connects to the hull vent fitting; the opposite end connects to the factory hard tank vent port.

Adapter Hose Assembly Preassembled, labeled connections
Hose Clamps Stainless steel
Quick-Connect Fittings Red locking ring style
Ballast Bag(s) WakeBallast vinyl bladder

Before You Start

  1. Turn off battery power to ballast systems.
  2. Remove rear storage compartment cushions for access.
  3. Locate the factory rear hard tank, vent/overflow hose, and hull through-hull fitting.
!
The factory vent hose runs from the upper side of the hard tank to the vent fitting on the side of the boat. That hose is about to lose its job.
1
Remove Factory Hose From Hard Tank

Locate the vent/overflow hose attached to the top side of the rear hard tank.

  1. Loosen the hose clamp securing the hose to the hard tank fitting.
  2. Slide the clamp back along the hose.
  3. Pull the hose off the barbed fitting.
i
Depending on model year, the fitting location may vary slightly, but access is typically through the rear corner seating compartment.
2
Disconnect Hose From Through-Hull Fitting

Follow the same factory hose to the hull side fitting.

  1. Loosen the hose clamp using the 5/16" socket and ratchet.
  2. Remove the hose from the through-hull fitting.
  3. Remove the entire factory hose from the boat. The original vent hose is no longer needed.
3
Install Adapter Assembly to Hard Tank

Take the supplied WakeBallast adapter assembly and connect it to the hard tank.

  1. Slide the supplied hose clamp onto the adapter hose.
  2. Install the adapter onto the hard tank barbed fitting.
  3. Tighten the hose clamp securely.
!
Do not overtighten. Crushing fittings is a weird hobby.
4
Connect Adapter to Through-Hull Fitting

Locate the hose end labeled "Through-Hull Fitting" on the adapter assembly.

  1. Slide the hose onto the factory through-hull connector.
  2. Reinstall the hose clamp.
  3. Tighten securely.
At this point: factory venting is restored, the adapter assembly is fully installed, and ballast bag connections are ready.
5
Connect Ballast Bag Hoses

The ballast bag uses quick-connect fittings with red locking rings.

  1. Pull the red locking ring upward.
  2. Push the connector fully onto the ballast bag fitting.
  3. Press firmly until seated completely.
  4. Push the red locking ring downward to lock the connection.

You should feel the connector engage securely.

Hose Routing Guide

Bag Port Connection Purpose
Bottom Port Fill / Drain hose Water enters and exits through this connection
Top Port Vent / Overflow hose Releases trapped air, prevents over-pressurization, manages overflow

Final Inspection

Before testing, verify the following:

All hose clamps are tight

Quick-connect fittings are locked

No hose kinks or pinching

Hoses do not rub sharp edges

System Test

  1. Power on ballast system.
  2. Fill ballast tank and bag.
  3. Inspect all hose connections, the through-hull fitting, and quick-connect fittings.
  4. Check for leaks.
  5. Verify proper draining operation.

A properly installed system should:

Fill smoothly
Vent air correctly
Drain completely
Remain leak-free

Which is more than can be said for most marine electrical systems humanity has unleashed upon the water.

Troubleshooting

Bag Does Not Fill
  • Verify fill/drain hose is connected to the bottom port
  • Check for kinked hose
  • Inspect pump operation
Water Leaks
  • Tighten hose clamps
  • Verify fittings are fully seated
  • Confirm locking rings are engaged
Poor Venting or Overflow
  • Ensure vent hose is connected to top bag port
  • Inspect through-hull connection for blockage

Recommended Maintenance

  • Inspect hose clamps every season
  • Check quick-connect O-rings periodically
  • Winterize ballast bags and hoses before freezing temperatures
  • Drain system fully after use when storing long-term

Because water expands when frozen. One of physics' less negotiable personality traits.
